Our School Curriculum

At St Michael's Junior Church School we believe that a school curriculum should be broad and balanced, offering children the opportunity to achieve success in many different areas. Our curriculum delivers the 2014 National Curriculum but there are other planned opportunities that make up the wider curriculum. We are using Curriculum Maestro to ensure these opportunities are relevant and that the coverage also allows logical connections between different subjects and the 10 big ideas.

The whole school follow timetabled Maths and English lessons each and every day and for the most part in the mornings.  Afternoon sessions usually will a topic approach as teachers implement knowledge rich cornerstones curriculum projects as well as discrete subject such as Computing, PE and RE.

There will more to come about our updated curriculum offer throughout this academic year.

We use a CPA approach, teaching the children concrete, pictorial and abstract concepts.
We use White Rose and NCTEM resources and our children also really love playing TTRS to help with their times tables knowledge.
We use Same Day Intervention (SDI) in Maths. While pupils complete ' The Daily Mile' teachers assess the learning that has already taken place. They can can then deliver a follow up session the very same day. This might support or challenge the children, the adults will scaffold the learning where necessary or the children may consolidate what they have already learned.
Pupil also access Doodle Maths from home for the opportunity to revisit key learning and apply learning through challenges set.
Every day classes complete fluent in five, reasoning in five or basic skills practise to fluent in 5  to revisit and apply key learning concepts.
After break, the whole school listens to their class story and completes English sessions based on the Talk for Writing approach. We also teach handwriting 4x a week. Our focus later in the year will be on spellings. We currently use NoNonsense spelling- at least one session a week.
Check out our core reading offer too.
We love words at St Michael's and complete word of the day actvities to help close the vocabualry gap. You'll see the Ninja being awarded to upils each day for excellent application fo this vocabulary.
Other Curriculum Areas
